Job Details

Shriners Hospital for Children, Northern California (SHCNC) is seeking an academic pediatric sports surgeon to join a very busy Pediatric Sports Medicine and Joint Preservation program.  A fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine is prerequisite.  This position is based in the Orthopaedic Department at SHCNC ( which has one of the busiest pediatric sports practices in northern California, on the campus of the University of California, Davis Medical Center.  This surgeon will join 8 pediatric orthopaedists and 2 pediatric hand surgeons who comprise the joint SHCNC- UC Davis Pediatric Orthopaedic Service, and will be eligible to join the clinical faculty at UC Davis.  Residents from 3 orthopaedic residencies rotate at SHCNC, along with a pediatric orthopaedic fellow.

The Pediatric Sports Medicine and Joint Preservation service currently includes Surgical and Medical Directors (a pediatric orthopaedic sports surgeon and a sports physiatrist), a physician assistant, a physical therapist, and a case manager. The SHCNC patient population includes adolescents and children with a wide range of injuries and conditions; current staffing is inadequate to meet the demand for hip, shoulder, knee, and ankle reconstruction.  Skills in hip arthroscopy and cartilage restoration are desirable.  According to the Mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children, children are accepted for care without regard for their ability to pay.

This surgeon will work closely with the Surgical and Medical Directors of the Pediatric Sports Medicine and Joint Preservation service , under the direction of the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery of SHCNC, to develop and continue to grow this program along the lines of other internationally known SHCNC orthopaedic subspecialty services with the goal of becoming an international leader in pediatric sports and joint restoration surgery, by focusing on the Mission of SHC: excellence in clinical care, research, and teaching.

SHCNC also provides clinical research support, and includes the Institute for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine, an onsite basic science research center; and a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience.

Please contact Michelle James, Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, for information regarding this position at or 916 453 2049.
