The School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) of the George Washington University (GW) invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Candidates from racial, ethnic, and gender groups that are under-represented in medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery are invited to apply for this important position. 

GW was chartered by an act of US Congress in 1821 realizing the vision of George Washington who, during his presidency, called for a national university to educate the next citizen leaders of the United States. Today, GW, a private urban research-intensive university, has its main campus located in the heart of our Nation’s Capital in close proximity to vital national landmarks. The SMHS was founded in 1824 making it the 11th Medical School in the country. The SMHS is dedicated to improving the health of our local, national, and global communities by educating a diverse workforce of tomorrow’s leaders in medicine, science, and health sciences; healing through innovative and compassionate care; advancing biomedical, translational, and health services delivery research with an emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration; and promoting a culture of excellence through inclusion, service, and advocacy.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is one of 24 academic departments in SMHS and one that has been known for its commitment to high standards in patient care and for its excellence in training generations of Orthopaedic surgeons with high success rate in securing fellowships of their choosing. The current faculty members of the department are mostly young, energetic, and highly motivated, providing a solid foundation for a new chair to build upon creating an important next chapter in the department’s history. 

By overseeing the clinical, educational, and research missions of the department, the Chair will support and contribute to the GW healthcare enterprise’s long-term goal of becoming the pre-eminent health care provider in the Washington, D.C. region. By serving on the leadership team of the SMHS, the Chair will be responsible for growing the clinical and academic footprint of the department and bolstering the department’s local, national, and global reputation. The Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery reports directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

Qualifications: Applicants must be board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery, and a technically skilled surgeon who plans to continue their active surgical practice. Applicants must also demonstrate a sustained record of professional excellence through experience, publications, evaluations, references, and national and/or international recognition.
