University of Miami Health System

Chair, Department of Orthopaedics

The University of Miami Health System seeks a nationally recognized leader in orthopaedic surgery to serve as the next Chair, Department of Orthopaedics.

UHealth, the University of Miami’s health care delivery system, is the only comprehensive academic health system in South Florida, and includes three hospitals, more than 30 outpatient facilities in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Collier counties, with more than 1,200 physician and scientist faculty in the Miller School of Medicine. This is a time of great change and opportunity for UHealth. With the appointment of Edward Abraham, MD as EVP for Health Affairs and CEO, UHealth as well as the newly appointed Dean and Chief Academic Officer, UMiami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Henri Ford, the University’s commitment and continued investment in the School of Medicine and Health System is under new direction and leadership.

Never before has the health care services environment in South Florida been more challenging or more competitive, leading UHealth to take bold actions to secure their place in a rapidly changing environment. As South Florida’s only comprehensive academic medical center, UHealth is well positioned to compete effectively with formidable competitors in the region, including several for-profit health care organizations. To position themselves for sustained growth, UHealth has sought to strengthen their operating performance, improve its facilities, establish geographic reach through satellite medical facilities/hospitals, and explore novel business models to enhance their partnerships. UHealth is undergoing exceptional growth and investment as evidenced by the recent announcement that UHealth will open a world-class 184-acre, $4 billion medical center at SoLé Mia in North Miami.

A critical strategic growth initiative identified by the University of Miami’s Board of Trustees and UHealth leadership is the establishment of a destination orthopaedic surgery program. Today, the Department of Orthopaedics is comprised of thirty-three (33) orthopaedic surgeons performing over 10,000 orthopaedic surgeries annually at UMiami Tower and Jackson Memorial Hospital, providing multidisciplinary care by fellowship-trained physicians employing the latest research and most advanced technology.

The next Chair, Department of Orthopaedics will join UHealth at a remarkable time; the academic medical center is actively undergoing transformation as it prepares for a new environment for health care and higher education. The Chair will be a critical asset in contributing to the establishment and continued growth of clinical programs in orthopaedic surgery. Working with the leaders of UHealth and the School of Medicine, the Chair will develop a business plan and unifying vision that establishes the Orthopaedics Department as a center of excellence and disrupts the market competitively. This plan will involve rapid clinical growth leveraging referrals from the primary care base established by UHealth and the School of Medicine as well as community physicians.

The next Chair will be an outstanding leader and skilled physician, widely recognized in the field with a strong track record of program building and innovation. The ideal physician will have a strong training pedigree, a track record of clinical excellence, possess excellent communications skills, and be committed to providing an exceptional patient experience.
