Director of Research, Orthopedic Associates of Hartford, Bone & Joint Institute

 The Director of Research for Orthopedic Associates of Hartford (OAH) would be affiliated with the prestigious Hartford Health Care (HHC) Bone & Joint Institute (BJI) and will oversee the strategic direction, organization, oversight, and facilitation of all clinical research and research partnerships for the Bone & Joint Institute. The Director will provide administrative leadership to grow and strengthen research and develop and implement programs, structures, policies, and systems to ensure cost effective and high-quality research. The Director will promote a culture of research inquiry across all clinical teams and integrate research into clinical care programs and strategic business initiatives across all BJI musculoskeletal service lines. The Director will also have oversight for personnel management to include staff performance, education, and training initiatives to assure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and resource efficiency. The Director will also have a part time clinical practice in orthopedic collaborating with the physicians at OAH.



Key Areas of Responsibility


  1. Strategy, Partnership and Growth
    1. In collaboration with Physician-in-Chief and VP Business Operations, responsible and accountable to develop and implement a strategic plan which supports ongoing coordination and evaluation of research programs across BJI.
    2. Facilitate and foster relationships with key partners, strategic alliances and other entities related to research to grow BJI’s presence in the market.
    3. Partner with senior officials to critically analyze, evaluate and leverage new opportunities and collaborators.
    4. Collaborate with influential thought leaders and key stakeholders to identify innovative solutions to increase clinical trial participation in targeted areas.
    5. Serve as a project leader for initiatives within BJI.
    6. Participate in HHC system-wide research initiatives involving musculoskeletal care
    7. Foster research relationships and collaborate with other HHC Institutes to create research enterprises in affiliated musculoskeletal surgical and medical fields
    8. Work in conjunction with the University of Connecticut Medical School to promote research projects and studies with medical students, residents, and fellows.
    9. Work within the auspices of the BJI, LLC Co-management agreement with Hartford HealthCare.
    10. Advance and foster goals for a self-funded BJI research department, via funded grants, clinical trials, and philanthropy.


  1. Clinical Research Infrastructure Development
    1. Develop, maintain and/or expand clinical research expertise, policies, processes and standards in: regulatory affairs, budgeting and financial management, quality control/assurance/improvement, training & education, coordination, nursing, research laboratory, data management, protocol development, and research informatics.
    2. Design/re-design and oversee the management of systems and technology that support clinical research service areas, including multi-departmental large-scale initiatives (i.e., CTMS optimization, data analytics, trial matching software, reporting templates, etc.).
    3. In collaboration with BJI senior leadership, support the development and growth of the BJI clinical research footprint across existing and future sites.
    4. Monitor and report trends and performance metrics associated with clinical trial activities (recruitment, finances, timeliness, utilization, etc.) to ensure transparency and visibility and to quicken risk mitigation.


 1. Clinical Research Operations

    1. Provide guidance, direction and leadership to management team and manage direct reports to ensure adequate daily operations and staff oversight across multiple campuses and research programs.
    2. Ensure robust QA program for early identification and resolution of compliance issues and concerns. Ensure the development and implementation of quality improvement plans to mitigate future risk and reporting on research compliance activities.
    3. Responsible for establishing appropriate staffing models and performance measures to build and adequately maintain a centralized office composed of well-trained clinical research professionals.
    4. Partner with HHC departments to trouble-shoot complex issues and implement creative solutions that enhance research operations, efficiencies and/or quality.
    5. Work closely with investigators to constantly monitor progress and meet regularly with disease management teams/ faculty leads to optimize performance and find opportunities for success.
    6. In partnership with investigators, ensure all local and Federal Regulations, Good Clinical Practices (GCP), and IRB requirements are met and that the central research programs are structured to continue to adhere to these guidelines.
    7. Provide financial oversight of the BJI Clinical Research Division. Develop and effectively manage operating budgets to meet financial targets.



  1. Participate in strategic, long range and short-term planning for the Bone & Joint Institute. Serve as the leader or member of various standing and ad hoc committees within the Bone & Joint Institute.



  1. Serve as a recognized clinical research professional, internally and externally.
    1. Actively participate in professional associations related to Orthopedic research. Promote BJI program results through publications, presentations, and lectures.
    2. Partner with external institutions and universities to develop internship and teaching programs within the clinical research at BJI.
    3. Identify opportunities for academic collaborations within clinical research operations and administration.
    4. Maintain and promote and develop national visibility and engagement through active participation in associations and relevant offsite meetings.
    5. May serve as a lecturer and/or adjunct faculty at University or other setting.


Working Relationships


Direct Report: This position reports to the VP of Operations, Bone & Joint Institute, and the Physician in Chief of the Bone & Joint Institute.


Workers Responsible For: 5 Direct Reports


Nature of Supervision: This role oversees the Clinical Research Division of the Bone & Joint Institute, including:  

2 Clinical research coordinators, 2 Research Assistants, 3 Medical/Scholarly Writers. This role works collaboratively with the HH Director of Research at Hartford Hospital.

Future hires to include research coordinators, research assistants, scholarly/medical writers, Senior Scientists, data analysts, statistical support.


Minimum Requirements and Specifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree required; MD required

Experience: 3+ years of experience in operational oversight of orthopedic clinical trials with 2+ years of managerial level experience

Preferred Requirements

Education: Master’s degree preferred

Experience: 5+ years of experience in operational oversight of orthopedic clinical trials with 3+ years of managerial level experience

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Current clinical research professional certification such as ACRP, SOCRA, or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills with a high degree of professionalism and competence in dealing with faculty and employees at all levels.
  • Extensive knowledge in clinical research operations and associated regulations governing clinical research
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide leadership and promote collaboration
