The Department currently provides coverage to 3 acute care hospitals across the system including: Highland Hospital, San Leandro Hospital and Alameda Hospital. InApril of 2016, AHS opened a brand new, state-of-the art 9-story, Acute Care Tower at Highland (level 1 trauma center) to better serve the city of Oakland and the broader East Bay. Since its founding, the organization has been a vital community asset, which embodies a core mission of “Caring, Healing, Teaching, and Serving All.” The heart of its mission is to promote wellness, eliminate disparities, and improve and maintain the health of residents of the diverse communities of Alameda County.

The current Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has 3 divisions including Orthopaedic Surgery, Podiatry, and Pain Management and Rehabilitation, which includes an inpatient rehabilitation facility at San Leandro hospital. The department has 8 Physician Assistants who work across the system. Highland Hospital is also a clinical site for the San Francisco Orthopaedic residency program (SFORP) with 3 residents present per rotation. The SFORP residency is based in San Francisco with a total of 15 residents in the 5-year program. The service spans 5 different clinical sites for the program with Highland hospital providing the resident’s principle training in acute trauma.

Located 14 miles from San Francisco, Oakland is a thriving, exciting community and has been designated as one of America’s top twelve art communities. Oakland has successfully combined art, artists, and venues for creativity and expression. A beautiful urban mecca, the city boasts a plethora of shops and restaurants, and a walkable lifestyle with vibrant neighborhoods with distinct charm including the Oakland Hills with spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay.  The city is a renowned culinary hotbed with diverse cuisines in both restaurants and markets, often featuring locally grown produce with an international influence. This reflects the cultural traditions of the city's ethnically diverse population. Historically a focal point of the West Coast blues and jazz scenes, Oakland is also home to musicians representing many musical genres such as rhythm and bluesgospelfunkpunkheavy metal, rap, and hip hop.
