The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is seeking an Enthusiastic Orthopedic Surgeon to Lead the Orthopedic Section of the Specialty Care Service Line. The Minneapolis VA Orthopedic Section is one of the busiest service lines within the Veterans Health Administration performing more than 1300 operating room cases, 300 clinic-based minor procedures, and 15,000 outpatient visits each year. Orthopedic care is provided by a large and diverse staff of orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, and registered nurses. Subspecialty surgical services include elbow and hand, total joint arthroplasty, foot and ankle, shoulder, musculoskeletal oncology, and sports medicine.
Duties
The successful candidate will be a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon with at least 15 years in practice and who has demonstrated experience in successfully managing a busy orthopedic surgery department/division. A demonstrated track record in effective and ethical leadership is considered an important factor for success in this position.
You should also have demonstrated experience in creating a disciplined culture of continuous improvement resulting in redesigned workflows, enhanced coordination of work activities, improved efficiency, and improved patient access to care. The candidate should also have a demonstrated track record of creating programs and leading initiatives that ensure quality healthcare delivery to patients as well as ensuring patient safety.
You need to possess a strong desire to understand and address a broad spectrum of health care issues specific to the U. S. veteran population. As a major site for training of University of Minnesota medical students and orthopedic residents, the candidate must be eligible for academic appointment at the University of Minnesota Medical School and should have extensive experience in creating, coordinating, and supervising educational activities as well as conducting clinical training.
In addition to patient-care responsibilities in the clinic and operating room, administrative duties for this position include: staff recruitment and development; staff performance evaluation; department work-flow and personnel issues; development of department policies and procedures; communication and implementation of medical center policies and initiatives; participation in University of Minnesota activities related to medical education and research.
