ABOUT UNIVERSTY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHAPEL HILL

History

The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill was officially chartered in 1789 and built in 1793 becoming the first public institution of higher education in the nation. The School of Medicine was established in 1879 with an overarching mission to improve the well-being of the people of North Carolina to provide high-quality patient care to underserved and reduce health disparities. Today, the school has more than 1,600 faculty members and graduates 883 medical students per year and strives to be the leading public institution in the nation.

UNC began offering care on its flagship campus with the opening of UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill in 1952 expanding over the years to include dedicated hospitals for children, women’s health, neurosciences and cancer. Today, UNC Healthcare is a 12-hospital system that spans the state, employing more than 33,000 people and generating more than $5 billion in patient revenue. UNC Hospitals is ranked #2 in the state by US News and World Reports and is nationally ranked in 5 adult and 7 pediatric specialties. All UNC Hospitals have achieved American Nurses Credentialing Center magnet status, recognizing excellence in nursing quality.

Leading Patient Care

Located in central North Carolina, in the university town of Chapel Hill, UNC Hospitals is a 950-bed medical facility offering advanced treatments in almost every specialty in medicine and surgery. In addition, to the main campus care is provided at additional hospitals in Hillsborough, and Siler City. The hospital holds a level 1 designation as a trauma center with the American College of Surgeons and has a world leading burn center.

Expanding Care into the Community

Since 1998, UNC has been expanding access to care across the state of North Carolina developing a 12-hospital system that serves people across the state, many with limited access to care in rural communities. In 2018, UNC delivered high quality care through the following patient encounters:

  • 3.5 million outpatient visits
  • 120,00 surgical patients
  • 510,000 emergency department visits
  • 402,501 volunteer hours

UNC Healthcare owns or works in close partnership with hospitals across the state to offer care to patent in their communities, and currently owns or manages the following hospitals:

  • UNC Hillsborough Hospital (Hillsborough, NC)
  • UNC Chatham Hospital (Siler City, NC)
  • UNC Rex Hospital (Raleigh, NC)
  • UNC Rockingham (Eden, NC)
  • UNC Nash Health (Rocky Mount, NC)
  • UNC Wayne Health (Goldsboro, NC)
  • UNC Johnston Health (Clayton, NC)
  • UNC Lenoir Hospital (Lenoir, NC)     
  • UNC Pardee Hospital (Hendersonville, NC)
  • Caldwell Hospital (Lenoir, NC)

With the launch of telehealth initiatives and the expansion of UNC Physicians Network, the healthcare system is positioned to deliver care in rural communities, overcome barriers to care and improve healthcare quality to the underserved.

UNC Physicians

UNC has more than 5,000 clinicians in its network that are either employed or affiliated. 3,200 employed physicians belong to the UNC Faculty Practice (a part of the UNC School of Medicine) or the UNC Physicians Network (community practices employees by the healthcare system). The remaining affiliated physicians a re part of UNC’s population health efforts, and are managed by the UNC Health Alliance. Together, these three entities deliver healthcare to more patients than any other physician practice in the state.

World Leading Research

The University of North Carolina is ranked 5th in the nation for federal research funding, and conducts more than $1.1 billion in sponsored research, making it the 11th largest research university in the country. Boasting two Nobel laureates who conducted seminal work in genetics, UNC is the 21st most cited university in the world. UNC faculty conducted $33 million in clinical trials research and received $57 million in R&D from industry. All this to enhance the welfare of the people of the state and bring new discoveries to advance science.

Educating the next generation of healthcare providers

UNC is providing education to the next generation of health care provides and is highly ranked by US News and World Reports through its School of Medicine (ranked 1st in Primary Care, and 23rd in Research), School of Nursing (ranked 5th for Master’s programs) and Gillings School of Public Health (ranked #1 in nation). Overall, UNC is ranked #1 in best value colleges by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.
